The Lychee Epiphany: My First Sip of Specialty Coffee
You’ll notice a few fantastic Canadian roasters in this calendar, and today, I want to tell you why they hold a special place in my heart.
My coffee journey started long before I ever ordered a specialty coffee for myself. A university friend of mine was an early adopter, but I never paid much attention until I started seeing interesting explanations of coffee from figures like James Hoffmann and Morgan Eckroth popping up on YouTube (at least the algorithm's good for something)
Fast forward a few months, and September Coffee started appearing on the scene. I was an immediate fan, even though I barely understood what "specialty coffee" really meant.
I remember shopping for a bag of coffee and stumbling across one with notes of "Strawberry, Lychee, and Coconut cream." (If you’re in MCL, you know exactly which coffee this is.)
The first time I tasted it, the experience was absolutely mind-blowing. The fact that coffee could taste like that—fruity, creamy, and inherently sweet—made me feel like I wasn't drinking coffee at all.
That single sip proved to be the lightning strike that kicked off my long, winding journey into this specialty coffee hobby. The pure joy of that first experience is something I hope to recreate for everyone starting out in their coffee journey, just as September Coffee continues to do with their excellent selections and amazing roast profiles.
